P-pop icons SB19 and BINI have been officially chosen by Billboard Philippines to be given a special award at the launch event of Billboard Korea — the ‘Billboard K POWER 100’ — in Seoul this month.
The Kings of P-pop and the Nation’s Girl Group are officially set to personally attend and grace the event with their presence. The award that will be given to the two groups — titled the Voices Of Asia Award — will honor their groundbreaking contributions to Filipino music and their unwavering championing of P-pop on the global stage.
The ‘Billboard K POWER 100’ is an event that aims to “highlight the influence of Korean music, particularly K-pop, on the global music industry.” It is greatly expected to “further solidify the global status of Korean music in line with the launch of Billboard Korea” and will center specifically on “the Korean and Asian music industries, selecting influential figures from the region to celebrate their accomplishments.” It is the Korean iteration of The ‘Billboard POWER 100’ — described as “an annual event recognizing the most influential figures in the global music industry and celebrating their contributions alongside artists.”
Serving as a celebration of “nearly a century of Korean popular music and the advancement of South Korea’s music industry,” it is slated to happen this August 27 at the Yeong Bin Gwan Hall of THE SHILLA Seoul.
As part of the upcoming event, ‘The 2024 Billboard K-POP Artist 100’ — “a bilingual biographical dictionary of K-music stars” — will be showcased. A “special edition” set to be published annually, it will “serve as a valuable guide to K-pop trends for readers both domestically and internationally.”
Alongside SB19 and BINI, the event will also see the attendance of such notable names as Billboard President Mike Van and Editorial Director Hannah Karp, along with global Billboard leaders from Brazil, Japan, as well as the Philippines. In addition, top K-pop artists are expected to attend, while Brazilian pop star Luísa Sonza will also be visiting Korea for the first time. Furthermore, “many leading figures and innovators who have driven the transformation of Korean and Asian music” will also be present.
Since their official debut in 2018, SB19 have consistently solidified their place in Filipino music, becoming the trailblazers of the modern P-pop genre. Over the years, they have amassed a solid and loyal following in the form of their dedicated and growing fanbase, the A’TIN, earning them millions upon millions of streams and listeners, both in the Philippines and abroad.
They are the first ever Southeast Asian and Filipino act to earn a Top Social Artist nomination at the Billboard Music Awards in 2021. Alongside this, they are also the first Filipino artist to rank on Billboard‘s Billboard Social 50 and the Next Big Sound charts, while their hit track “GENTO” made its debut on the Billboard World Digital Sales Charts at No. 8. Alongside Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, the P-pop icons are also the cover stars of Billboard Philippines‘ inaugural print offering, the Pop Issue, released last October 2023.
Following their official debut in 2021, BINI made their breakthrough with the unprecedented widespread success of their summery single “Pantropiko,” released in late 2023. Since the track’s viral reception, the eight-member group has seen a continuous rise through the ranks of Filipino music, earning their place as one of the outstanding frontrunners of P-pop.
Many of their other songs, including “Karera,” “Salamin, Salamin,” and “Cherry On Top,” have also gone on to become viral hits, consistently earning places on Billboard Philippines‘ Hot 100 and Top Philippine Songs charts. They are notably known for being the first ever Rising Star honorees of the inaugural Billboard Philippines Women In Music, held last March 22.
