The one and only Mother Monster, Lady Gaga, is back with her latest studio album, MAYHEM.
On MAYHEM, the celebrated pop icon takes listeners on a sonic journey that begins with the genres of electronic-dance and techno-pop, with glimpses of industrial rock and funk sprinkled in before it embraces a variety of power ballads that pay homage to the musical greats of the 1980s. It’s a fascinating mixture of what made many of her previous records so beloved, even as it integrates new segments that further explore what the multi-hyphenate musician is capable of as both an artist and visionary.
According to an official press release, Lady Gaga described this album as a project that “started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved” — even likening the project to the process of “reassembling a shattered mirror: Even if you can’t put the pieces back together perfectly, you can create something beautiful and whole in its own new way.”
MAYHEM is executive-produced by Lady Gaga herself, alongside Michael Polansky and Andrew Watt (Justin Bieber, Post Malone, Demi Lovato), with individual producers including Watt, Cirkut (Jungkook, Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd, Katy Perry), and French DJ-musician Gesaffelstein (The Weeknd, Daft Punk, Charli XCX).
Just recently, Lady Gaga was announced to be the headliner for this year’s iteration of the Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival, wherein she will be performing alongside the likes of Green Day, Post Malone, Charli XCX, Missy Elliot, Megan Thee Stallion, LISA, JENNIE, Zedd, Benson Boone, and a whole lot more. She also released what she described as LG6.5 with the standards album Harlequin in support of her participation in the movie musical Joker: Folie À Deux, which features a mix of covers and original compositions.
