Spike Lee’s latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, a modern English-language reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, has arrived — and it features a new track from A$AP Rocky.
Set in modern-day New York City, the A24-produced thriller follows a powerful music mogul David King (Denzel Washington) who receives a ransom demand after his chauffeur’s son is mistakenly kidnapped.
Just like High and Low, the film is loosely based on Ed McBain’s 1959 novel King’s Ransom and marks the fifth collaboration between Lee and Washington, which is their first in nearly two decades since 2006’s Inside Man.
According to Lee, the Harlem-born rapper takes on the lead role as the character Yung Felon. He’s joined by rapper Ice Spice, making her film debut, and Broadway star LaChanze.
The ensemble cast includes Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson (as Detective Earl Bridges), Aubrey Joseph, Michael Potts, Wendell Pierce, and Elijah Wright.

Highest 2 Lowest premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival last May. Washington also received an Honorary Palme d’Or during the festival, recognizing his outstanding contributions to cinema through the years. The award was presented by Lee ahead of the film’s premiere.
It’s unclear if it will get a theatrical release date in the Philippines but it will be available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting September 5.
Meanwhile, A$AP Rocky is set to release his highly anticipated fourth studio album, Don’t Be Dumb, which will be out sometime later this year, his first since 2018’s Testing.
