Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, and Dua Lipa are among a stellar lineup of musical talents who find themselves in the spotlight, having earned coveted mentions on the shortlist for the upcoming 2024 Academy Awards.
The prestigious Academy announced the shortlists yesterday (December 21), in a grand unveiling, with the shortlists spanning 10 categories that encompass the likes of awards like “Best Original Song” and “Best Original Score”.
Delving into the realm of “Best Original Song”, a notable amount of fifteen tracks have garnered attention, including all three submissions from the summer blockbuster Barbie. Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance The Night,’ Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?,’ and the collaborative effort of Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Ryan Gosling with ‘I’m Just Ken,’ are just three of the fifteen entries that made the cut on the Academy’s shortlist.
Among the standout mentions are Olivia Rodrigo’s impactful contribution to The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, ‘Can’t Catch Me Now,’ the entrancing ‘Am I Dreaming?‘ from Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’s Metro Boomin-curated soundtrack featuring A$AP Rocky and Roisee, Sharon Van Etten’s ‘Quiet Eyes‘ from Celine Song’s breakout debut Past Lives, and a nod to Wes Anderson for his co-write on Jarvis Cocker’s whimsical, banjo-led, ‘Dear Alien (Who Art In Heaven)’ from Asteroid City.
For Best Original Score, the Academy’s shortlist also mirrors a rich array of musical prowess. Academy favorites Ludwig Göransson and John Williams contributed sweeping scores to blockbusters like Oppenheimer and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, respectively. Other noteworthy mentions include Joe Hisaishi for his melancholic soundtrack for Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, Daniel Pemberton and his electronic soundscapes for Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Jerskin Fendrix and his experimental score for Poor Things, and lastly, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s once again for their colorful pop sheen work on Barbie.
Responding to the Barbie nods, Dua Lipa expressed her elation on Instagram, sharing an excerpt of the behind-the-scenes process of making ‘Dance The Night’ with Mark Ronson, and expressing gratitude to The Academy for the dreamlike recognition.
As anticipation builds, The Academy is set to vote on the shortlists from the period of January 11 to 16, with the official nominations slated for announcement on January 23. The grand culmination, the 96th Academy Award ceremony, is scheduled to occur on March 10, 2024, at The Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
