Billie Eilish revealed to the Los Angeles Times that one of the songs off her Happier Than Ever album is about Olivia Rodrigo.

“I do feel a protectiveness over Olivia,” she said. “I have a song called ‘Goldwing‘ from my last album that’s kind of about her. I’ve never said that to anyone. It’s not only about her. I was just thinking about her when I was writing it. She was coming up, and she was younger than me, and nobody had ever been younger than me.”

“Olivia was getting big, and she was just, like, this little dainty child. I felt so nervous. I was worried about her. She came up in that acting world, and people are so weird. I don’t know—I just felt very protective over her. And I feel that way to everyone.”

In “GOLDWING,” Eilish sings: “They’re gonna tell you what you wanna hear / Then they’re gonna disappear / Gonna claim you like a souvenir / Just to sell you in a year.”

Later in the interview, she says, “I just see myself in all these young girls. And it’s the girls, man. Boys can handle themselves. They’re dudes—they don’t have to deal with it like we do. I just want to hold everybody in a little glass box and never let anything touch them.”

Eilish has been vocal in the past about the sexualization and exploitation of female artists. In an interview with Variety, she shared, “Nobody ever says a thing about men’s bodies,” she says. “If you’re muscular, cool. If you’re not, cool. If you’re rail thin, cool. If you have a dad bod, cool. If you’re pudgy, love it! Everybody’s happy with it. You know why? Because girls are nice. They don’t give a fuck because we see people for who they are!”

Rodrigo made her first foray into acting in 2015 when she was 12. She eventually established her music career in 2021 with the release of “drivers license.” She was 18 at the time. Since then, she has released two chart-making albums, SOUR and GUTS.
