Following Easter weekend, Lorde is set to make a grand comeback with the release of her new single, “What Was That?”

The beloved pop star has finally announced the release date of her long-awaited single, stating its impending arrival across various digital and streaming platforms on April 25, 2025. Together with the announcement, Lorde also shared the track’s cover art shot by Talia Chetrit and a pre-save link for the track here.

In promotion of the upcoming single, Lorde just held a surprise fan event at Washington Square Park in New York City, which saw thousands of fans flock to the public venue. Though law enforcement was quick to shut down the event before it even began, the Kiwi singer-songwriter and the track’s producer, Devonte Haynes (also known by his stage name Blood Orange) still made an appearance later on into the night, playing the track in its entirety before performing it in front of a crowd.

The location of Washington Square Park comes as no coincidence for both Lorde and her fans, as the same site was used as the backdrop to where the pop hitmaker first teased the track’s release. It was only earlier in the month when she posted her first TikTok that clued fans in on the song, as she belted along to the lyrics, “Since I was 17, I gave you everything, Now we wake from a dream, Well baby, what was that?”

Alongside the upcoming single’s release, Lorde scrubbed her official website and social media platforms clean, sparking speculation that the release of new music was imminent. Fans worldwide have been eagerly waiting for the release of the “Royals” hitmaker’s fourth studio album, following a series of teasers posted throughout the past year, which showcased her recording in the studio and collaborating with producers like Jim-E Stack and Devonte Haynes.

Just last year, Lorde collaborated with Charli XCX for a special collaboration version of “Girl, so confusing” from the latter’s chart-breaking BRAT album, with the song also included in a deluxe remix album titled Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat. During select shows of Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’ tour, the Kiwi singer also joined the hyper-pop phenomenon on stage, alongside the likes of Troye Sivan and Addison Rae.

The upcoming single marks the first official teaser from her highly anticipated fourth album, which follows her 2013 debut album Pure Heroine, 2017’s Melodrama, and her most recent effort, 2021’s Solar Power. Solar Power debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 upon its release and featured production from Jack Antonoff, alongside uncredited collaborations with Clairo, Phoebe Bridgers, and Robyn.
