Record producer and one of the most influential figures in the music industry, Clive Davis, passed away at his home in Manhattan, New York on June 22. He was 94 years old.
“To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives,” said his family in a statement. “He discovered, mentored, and championed the greatest artists in modern music history, leaving an indelible mark on culture that will endure for generations.”
“To his family, Clive was Dad and Granddaddy, the steady presence at the center of our lives, the source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love. No matter how extraordinary his professional accomplishments, he never lost sight of what mattered most: the people he loved.” it continued.
Known best for launching and guiding the careers of such superstars as Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, Bruce Springsteen, and Alicia Keys, Davis was born in 1932 in Brooklyn, New York City. He began his lengthy career in the recording industry in the legal department of Columbia Records after graduating from Harvard Law School in 1956. By 1967, he had ascended the ranks to become President of CBS Records, where he signed the likes of Billy Joel, Janis Joplin, and Aerosmith, among others.
In 1974, he founded Arista Records, where he signed the likes of Barry Manilow (who gave the label its first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit, “Mandy,” in 1975), Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Kenny G, Carly Simon, The Kinks, and Westlife, among many others. Perhaps his most notable (and successful) signing at Arista is Whitney Houston, who achieved a total of 11 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits with the label before her career was cut short by her untimely death in 2012.
After leaving Arista in 2000, Davis then founded J Records, which would release Alicia Keys‘ multi-platinum debut album, Songs in A Minor, the following year. The label’s artist roster would grow to include D’Angelo, Jamie Foxx, Busta Rhymes, and many others.
