Ang Bandang Shirley have just announced their disbandment.
The unexpected news was shared through an official statement on their Instagram account, wherein the group addressed the allegations towards member Emmanuel (Ean) Aguila and shared the news that they will not be continuing as a band anymore. Check out the full statement posted to their account below:
“This January, past allegations towards Ean resurfaced with new information, which has significantly affected the band and the members. Let it be known that we strongly do not condone his behavior, and we urged him to take full responsibility for his actions. He made a statement and eventually decided to quit the band. We support this decision, and we sincerely hope for the healing of all parties involved.
As for the rest of the band members, we have decided not to continue as a band. This is the end for Ang Bandang Shirley. We thank you for all your support and for listening to our music throughout the years.”
An initial set of allegations were made towards Aguila back in 2017, though at the time, the former guitarist and vocalist had ‘denied yet reflected’ on the sexual harassment allegations. Alongside former members Owel Alvero and Joe Fontanilla, Aguila addressed the allegations, stating, “We categorically deny any insinuations of predatory behavior or sexual abuse. However, our misconduct contributes to a larger culture of toxic masculinity that allows for these problems to perpetuate,” the band said in a statement.
“We recognize our individual accountabilities and we want to exonerate our other bandmates who were unfortunately dragged into this matter,” they added back then.
However, as the band’s recent statement suggests, new information regarding the allegations towards Aguila had surfaced, supposedly showcasing screenshots from a suggestive (yet highly inappropriate) conversation with a fan who was still underage. The newly unveiled information also detailed Aguila’s alleged relationship with a minor, which circulated earlier this January across various online platforms.
Ang Bandang Shirley first came into prominence in the Philippine music scene back in 2003, with Alvero, Aguila, and Fontanilla as the group’s original members. Their latest lineup consisted of Aguila on guitar and vocals, Debb Acebu on lead vocals, Joe Fontanilla on guitar and vocals, Paolo Arciga on bass, Miggy Abesamis on drums, and Kathy Gener on vocals and the manager role.
