In the summer of 2026, World Cup fever swept across North America as the tournament took over the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Forty-eight teams battled through 104 matches, chasing the ultimate prize. From thrilling comebacks and last-minute winners to roaring celebrations and tears of joy, one unforgettable moment after another unfolded on the pitch, captivating fans worldwide.
Meanwhile, in the music world, Billboard China teamed up with QQ Music to launch a voting campaign, timed to coincide with the official World Cup schedule, to determine its next cover star and celebrate the intersection between music and sports. Propelled by his hit song “Ling Jue Ding” (“Standing at the Peak”), which claimed the No. 1 spot on the campaign’s chart, rising artist ZI YU secured the cover feature for Billboard China and racked up four milestone achievements throughout the campaign.
The victory perfectly reflected the spirit carried in his song: always moving forward.
A Dream Above the Clouds
“Ling Jue Ding” was produced by Hexi Music, with co-production from Ruihe Entertainment, ZI YU’s management company. Its title draws inspiration from a legendary line in Chinese poetry — “One day I will climb to the highest peak and look down upon all mountains” — from Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu’s timeless work Looking at Mount Tai.
Featuring the strings of the International Chief Philharmonic Orchestra, the song blends traditional Chinese musical elements with modern production, creating a powerful fusion of heritage and innovation. Beyond its passionate energy, the track carries poetic depth and dramatic intensity, becoming a bold exploration of the boundaries of Chinese-style music. Its spirit echoes the very essence of football — a sport that transcends borders and celebrates diversity across cultures.
“Through the storms of yesterday, I will shape the world of tomorrow / Riding the legendary wings of Kunpeng, I will rise above every mountain.”
Drawing on traditional Chinese imagery — the honghu (a mythical swan symbolizing ambition) and Kunpeng (a legendary creature representing strength, freedom and limitless possibilities) — “Ling Jue Ding” is a song about refusing to surrender. It is about fighting for a place of your own, breaking through obstacles and embracing every challenge ahead.
“When youthful passion can break through frozen skies / When endless deserts are swept by storms, I remain fearless with an unyielding heart / Across thousands of miles of mountains and rivers, I will walk my own path with a song.” As the lyrics unfold, they summon a cascade of images—of unwavering ambition, relentless effort, and the courage to keep moving forward against all odds.
Every Moment Embraced, Every Tear Honored
The World Cup is about far more than fierce rivalries and nail-biting finishes decided in the final seconds. It is also a celebration of human connection — filled with memories, emotions and moments of reconciliation with one’s past.
ZI YU’s heartfelt ballads beautifully capture the emotional stories that unfold beyond the football pitch. “Embrace the Me Who Loves You” feels like a tribute to Luka Modrić’s “last dance” under the Toronto night sky, freezing a moment of farewell and perseverance in time. Meanwhile, “The Moon Over My Hometown” evokes the emotional reunion between Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha and his mother on the World Cup stage.
Football is a journey that reveals the courage hidden deep within us, while music is the torch that lights the way through the longest nights. When ZI YU’s youthful yet resilient voice rises, we recognize the countless figures running across the pitch — those who fight against impossible odds and continue chasing their dreams.
Whether it is team Cape Verde’s fearless newcomers, team Norway’s 28 years of persistence, or every individual facing challenges in their own lives yet choosing to move forward with courage — the message remains the same:
As long as passion burns in your heart and direction guides your steps, keep fighting, keep pushing forward. And one day, at the highest peak of your own journey, you will hear your own triumphant echo: “Ling Jue Ding.”
