Renowned film and television company A24 is now setting its sights on expanding its reach in the realm of music.
Though the indie powerhouse has spent the past decade or so growing its repertoire of critically acclaimed films such as Everything Everywhere All At Once, Moonlight, Lady Bird, and more, their recent announcement has left fans speculating whether or not the company is launching their own music label. However, to (almost) everyone’s surprise, A24 had already launched the A24 Music division all the way back in 2021 –– but their latest announcement merely suggests that the company plans on going full force with its music venture.
With the use of a cryptic post that features a vintage vinyl record and the simple message: “A24 Music. Stay tuned,” the company has since launched a set of new social channels for its record division, which aim to showcase exclusive content, further behind-the-scenes looks, or the announcement of new musical projects that align with their auteur-like aesthetic.
The company had already launched a YouTube channel for its music division back in 2021, which has platformed and housed several original songs and soundtrack compositions for the films and television shows under their banner –– as well as exclusive music videos and content that showcases the creative process of artists like Sharon Van Etten, Mitski, David Byrne, and Sophie Thatcher.
In an article published last year, Billboard highlighted that A24 launched its music division in 2021, partnering with Secretly Distribution to build a library of musical intellectual property and secure placements across streaming platforms and physical retailers. Beyond such ventures, A24 continues to blur the lines between film and music through projects like the upcoming Charli XCX-led movie The Moment, while also venturing into standalone music initiatives.
A set of examples would be that of OPUS: The Moretti EP, which features John Malkovich with compositions by Nile Rodgers and The-Dream, or even the soundtrack to the studio’s 2024 psychological horror film I Saw the TV Glow, scored by Alex G, alongside original contributions from Caroline Polachek, Sloppy Jane, Phoebe Bridgers, Kristina Esfandiari, Florist, yeule, Drab Majesty, and Snail Mail.
Expanding its revenue streams, A24 has curated Spotify playlists and launched limited-edition vinyl collections. Their official website even hosts a dedicated music section offering vinyl and CDs for soundtracks from titles like Opus, A Different Man, Babygirl, Y2K, Heretic, We Live In Time, Sing Sing, MaXXXine, Civil War, Past Lives, Everything Everywhere All At Once, among others.
However, one of A24 Music’s most ambitious endeavors to date is a tribute album honoring the 40th anniversary of Stop Making Sense, the iconic Talking Heads concert film and soundtrack. Titled Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Stop Making Sense, the album features covers including Paramore’s take on “Burning Down the House”, The National’s cover of “Heaven”, Lorde’s version of “Take Me To The River”, and Miley Cyrus’ rendition of “Psycho Killer.” It’s also worth noting that A24 has acquired the worldwide rights to the original Stop Making Sense concert film.
