YouTube’s Lofi Girl, known for studying in an endless loop in her cozy animated bedroom, has officially graduated.
The popular channel, which features a 24/7 stream titled lofi hip hop radio – beats to relax/study to, has been keeping the company for students, workers, and anyone seeking calm, instrumental background music. The music is always playing live, which also prevents YouTube ads from interrupting the stream.
The animated visuals were created by Colombian-French artist Juan Pablo Machado. The girl is seen studying in a softly lit room, wearing headphones, while her cat sits by the window.
On TikTok, the character is seen in a graduation attire and cap and holding her laptop that says “THE END.” But this doesn’t mean the end of an era, as the livestream continues.
For users who stay up late to study, work, or even just chill, the channel has provided a sense of comfort and companionship. Now, it feels like a full circle moment for fans who grew up with the character and see her graduate as well.
The channel was created by Dimitri Somoguy, an independent French producer, in March 2015 under the name ChilledCow. The channel began streaming lo-fi music in February 2017. In 2021, the channel rebranded as Lofi Girl. The livestream was briefly taken down in 2020 and 2022 because of false copyright claims, however YouTube confirmed that the takedowns were invalid and brought back the stream.
As of this writing, the channel currently has over 15 million subscribers. It has since spawned other radio livestreams such as synthwave radio – beats to chill/game to, summer lofi radio – chill beats for sunny days, and jazz lofi radio – beats to chill/study to.
