HBO announced that the two-part documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, chronicling the life and journey of the “Piano Man,” will debut on the cable network and stream on Max this summer.

The two-part film is more than just your typical documentary, but rather a portrait of an icon that delves into the stories and exploring the “love, loss, and personal struggles” behind the music. It promises fans an intimate look at Joel’s life and career, featuring never-before-seen performances, home movies, personal photos, and in-depth interviews.

It will be produced and co-directed by Emmy award winners Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin (Jane Fonda in Five Acts, Spielberg).

According to Lacy, fans who think they know the singer’s story will be surprised by the two-part documentary’s revelations and insights, saying, “I was drawn to his story as someone who knew little at the outset and was astounded at how autobiographical his songs are and how complex his story is.”

Among the executive producers of the two-part documentary are Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) and Sean Hayes (Will & Grace).

To share his excitement for the project, Hayes took to Instagram, saying, “I am so thrilled and honored to be a part of this very special project about an incredibly special talent — one of my music heroes — the one, the only, Billy Joel. This has been a long time coming, and I can’t wait for you all to see it this summer.”

The announcement for the documentary comes after Joel postponed four months of his current ‘Billy Joel in Concert’ tour to undergo surgery for a medical condition.

He returns to the stage on July 5 at Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium to resume his tour.
