After making its world premiere at the Manila International Film Festival (MIFF), the musical feature film Song of the Fireflies is finally scheduled to hit cinemas nationwide.

Starring Asia’s Phoenix, Morissette Amon, alongside Rachel Alejandro, the upcoming musical drama based on real-life events is expected to hit screens around the Philippines beginning this June 25, 2025. The news was shared by the two singer-actresses during their joint appearance on the popular primetime program ASAP last Sunday (April 6, 2025), wherein they expressed their excitement at the film’s impending release.

Directed by King Palisoc and written by Sarge Lacuesta, Song of the Fireflies features Morissette taking on the role of the real-life Loboc Children’s Choir’s founder, Alma Taldo, and the true story of how she assembled the world-renowned choir. Taking place between the years of 1980 and 1993, the film chronicles the story of their origins and participation in various competitions, to their first NAMCYA National Championship win. On the other hand, Alejandro plays the role of Enriqueta Butalid, who served as one of those who invested heavily to fund the LCC’s endeavors.

The film recently made its worldwide premiere at the Manila International Film Festival (MIFF), which took place from March 4 to 7, 2025, in Hollywood, Los Angeles. It was awarded the night’s most prestigious award of Best Picture, while Morissette was awarded Best Actress, and Alejandro was awarded Best Supporting Actress. Also awarded was Noel Comia Jr., who was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film as a character named Herbert.

“It feels very different to be up here, to be receiving an award that isn’t for my voice or for singing,” Morisette joked upon receiving her award on stage. “I want to thank the Manila International Film Festival for the recognition and for [also] giving us the platform to showcase this film that we’ve worked on for so long. I share this award with everyone from our production team,” she continued.

While tickets to the upcoming musical film are not yet available for purchase, make sure to stay tuned at this space for more updates on Song of the Fireflies’ upcoming theatrical release.
