Legendary Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep is confirmed to play influential singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joni Mitchell in an upcoming biopic directed by Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire).
Record producer Clive Davis confirmed the news at his annual pre-Grammy party in Los Angeles, spilling the beans while introducing Mitchell, revealing that the prolific actress would play her in the long-delayed biopic.
Meanwhile, rumors suggest that Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) may play a younger version of Mitchell; however, as of this writing, the casting has not been confirmed.
The project has been under development hell for decades. Crowe has developed a strong friendship with Mitchell ever since he interviewed the singer back in 1979 for Rolling Stone.
In an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in October 2025, Crowe said, “We’ve been working on it for about four years. We have regular meetings where I can ask her anything, and she speaks with her heart about all kinds of stuff. It’s a movie that will be not from a distance… This is from her perspective, her life, looking out.”
Aside from the forthcoming project, Streep is gearing up to return in her iconic role as fierce fashion mogul Miranda Priestley in The Devil Wears Prada 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2006 cult classic. It will premiere in Philippine cinemas on April 29, 2026.
Mitchell is one of the most influential female recording artists of the late 20th century, best known for her poetic and deeply personal lyricism. She rose to fame in the late 1960s and 1970s with timeless songs like “Both Sides Now,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” and “A Case of You.” Over the years, she has influenced generations of musicians and is widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
