HUNTR/X is gearing up for a comeback. Netflix is currently considering expanding the KPop Demon Hunters universe with new films, spin-offs, a live-action remake.
After becoming Netflix’s most-watched original animated film, KPop Demon Hunters is just getting started. Thanks to the unprecedented streaming success and a chart-topping soundtrack that has captured the hearts (and playlists) of fans, Netflix seems poised to build a franchise that could rival Disney’s Frozen, which became a massive commercial hit.
According to TheWrap, Netflix is exploring ideas to turn the hit into a full-blown media franchise — beginning with a film trilogy and sequels already in early development. A potential television spin-off series is also on the table. The sky is the limit for HUNTR/X and its creators. With long-form storytelling and a “demon of the week” format, the franchise has room to introduce new characters, deepen its mythology, and tell compelling new stories. Additionally, a short film that bridges the upcoming sequels is reportedly in the works.
On the other hand, a stage musical adaptation may also be on the horizon. The streamer previously found success on stage with Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which won multiple Tony Awards. Given how well the original songs have been received, experiencing them live on stage could be a truly magical experience.
KPop Demon Hunters premiered on Netflix in June and follows HUNTR/X, a K-pop girl group who tries to balance their lives as global pop idols with their secret roles as demon hunters protecting the world from supernatural threats.
As of this writing, Netflix has yet to make an official statement about their plans, but it would be a no-brainer to capitalize on the success and strike while the iron’s hot.
