The live-action Tangled film adaptation has found its Mother Gothel in Kathryn Hahn.

The Agatha All Along and The Studio star plays the main antagonist, loosely based on Dame Gothel from the German fairy tale, Rapunzel, which inspired Tangled. She is an old, manipulative woman who kidnaps Rapunzel and keeps her locked in a tower to exploit the healing powers of her hair to preserve her youth forever.

In January, Disney announced rising stars Teagan Croft (Titans) and Milo Manheim (Zombies) as the film’s leads, portraying Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, respectively.

The original Tangled animated film was released in 2010, featuring Mandy Moore as the voice of Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as the voice of Flynn Rider. Actress, singer, and multiple Tony Award nominee Donna Murphy voiced Mother Gothel. The film became a major hit, grossing nearly USD 600 million worldwide.

In the 2000s, Hahn starred in comedies and romantic films such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and The Holiday. In recent years, she gained prominence by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021, starring as Agatha Harkness in Marvel Studios’ WandaVision, and later leading her own series, Agatha All Along, in 2024

She has also voiced Dr. Olivia ‘Liv’ Octavius / Doctor Octopus in Sony’s blockbuster Spider-Verse animated films. Her other television roles include the Hulu miniseries Tiny Beautiful Things and Apple TV’s satirical comedy The Studio.
