Eggboy, the lo-fi solo project of renowned indie musician Diego Mapa (also of Pedicab and Tarsius) has announced a special edition figurine commemorating his The Unknown Wrestler EP, in partnership with novelty figurine company Epoxy Children.

The special edition four-inch figure is hand-sculpted on polymer resin material, and is limited to only twenty units worldwide. All figures will be packaged in a retro cardback packaging (in the style of ’70s and ’80s vintage figurines) that are signed and individually numbered by Mapa himself. Pre-orders will be open only until July 31st, with each figure priced at Php 2,500. On the rear end of the figure’s collectible packaging, Mapa designed the artwork, which symbolizes an ‘homage to fanzine art’ made via black ink on one of his pencil sketches.

Explaining the concept behind the design, Mapa stated, “At that time I was making the art, I was thinking, ‘What if the singer was a heartbroken anonymous wrestler?’ I kid you not, this was before the Hollywood film Nacho Libre. He went on to extend his gratitude to Epoxy Children for making a ‘wonderful rendition’ of the character he created.

“They gave it the 3-D treatment, technicolor, and tangible life. There was no hint from the universe that one day this doodle would be translated to a figurine. The Epoxy crew called out the secret name of the “Unknown Wrestler” and he just rose up from the cover,” he mentions.

Eggboy’s The Unknown Wrestler was first released in 1998 as a nine-track EP, and serves as a re-release of his debut EP Taste Test with the addition of bonus tracks. He first rose to prominence for his early recordings on 4-track cassette released and compiled in 98-05, which has garnered recognition as an underground classic over the years.

On the other hand, Epoxy Children broke through the international collectible circuit with his popular figurines of hip-hop icons like Kanye West, MF Doom, Freddie Gibbs, De La Soul, and Madlib, while also crafting mementos of other musical legends like Chet Baker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Steely Dan. They have also worked on several local artists, including The Diegos and DJ Loonie, among others.
