Drake turns back time and revisits his early career before he made a name for himself in the world of rap. The Canadian rapper is set to appear in an upcoming documentary titled Degrassi: Whatever It Takes, premiering at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival this September.
The documentary directed by Lisa Rideout delves into Degrassi and its impact as the Canadian television series that transformed teen TV, featuring insights from creators, fans, and stars, including Drake himself.
The franchise, which began in 1979 with The Kids of Degrassi Street, has spawned multiple television series and films. Many have praised it for its honest take on teen life, covering tough topics like bullying, mental health, and identity.
The Degrassi franchise includes notable series like Degrassi: The Next Generation, which played a major role in shaping Canadian pop culture and gained international attention. Over the years, it helped launch the careers of several actors, most notably Drake, who was then known as Aubrey Graham.
He starred in Degrassi: The Next Generation as Jimmy Brooks, a basketball star who becomes paralyzed after a school shooting. He appeared in 145 episodes between 2001 and 2009, ultimately leaving the series to focus on his music career. His time on the show helped lay the groundwork for his rise in the entertainment industry.
The festival runs from September 4 to September 14, 2025.
