After more than two decades, Barbie’s Cradle are back with a brand-new single, “Emergency,” released under Sony Music Entertainment.
Written by guitarist Kakoy Legaspi and produced by Barbie Almalbis together with the band, the indie pop track addresses existential anxiety with humor, which the song suggests is the healthiest way to confront life’s deepest questions.
“It’s a sarcastic take on existential crisis,” Legaspi shares in the official press release. “It’s about trying to make sense of life’s absurdity by simply becoming more ‘zen’ about it — and about ourselves.”
“Emergency” reflects the band at its most collaborative, mirroring the sound and spirit that defined its work in the late ’90s and early 2000s, particularly through its opening verse riff in 7/8 time, an unconventional rhythmic idea that became the foundation of the composition.
“I came up with the idea of the lyrics when I found myself staring at a piece of paper on the wall that had ‘emergency numbers’ written on it,” Legaspi shares. “At first, it was very hard for me to sing and present the song to the band, but Barbie came up with the ingenious idea of cutting up the verses in a very fast, jarring way, like a duet but with no spaces in between. It made the song flow way better and gave it a unique twist.”
Interestingly, the track was originally penned in the mid-2000s but remained shelved for years. It was rediscovered during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the band revisited it, working remotely between 2021 and 2022 to refine the arrangement.
The band reunited to record the song live in Almalbis’ home studio, with the sessions capturing the band’s chemistry. Acclaimed engineer Angee Rozul then delivered the final mix.
“Emergency” serves as the first taste of the band’s musical comeback, with several more songs set for release in the coming weeks ahead of their upcoming extended play (EP).
The band is set to stage their special one-night-only reunion concert on August 1 at the Music Museum. Tickets are almost sold out and available through Ticketmelon, priced at PHP 1,300 (free seating), PHP 1,900 (Orchestra), and PHP 2,900 (VIP), which includes a photo op, soundcheck access, and a signed poster.
