Mariah Carey has given us our first glimpse of what to expect from her upcoming sixteenth album with her new single, “Type Dangerous.”

The newly released track features a blend of R&B and hip-hop elements, laden with cheeky lyricism penned by Anderson.Paak, NWi, Daniel Moore, and Carey herself. Melding the pop superstar’s vocals together with “ERIC B IS PRESIDENT” by Eric B. & Rakim, this song kicks off a brand new era of her musical legacy — especially after the seven-year wait since her last album.

“I’m so excited to finally be releasing ‘Type Dangerous’ into the world!” shared Carey in an official press statement. “I’ve been locked up in the studio for quite some time working my behind off on new music, and I’m thrilled for the unveiling of it to my fans, starting with ‘Type Dangerous!’”

Together with the track’s release across various digital and streaming platforms, the musical icon also announced the release of a forthcoming music video for the track, which is scheduled to be released this June 13, 2025. Enlisting the talents of iconic music video director Joseph Kahn, who previously directed Mariah’s videos for “#Beautiful,” “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and the viral “It’s Time,” Lambs and casual fans across the world are sure to get a visual treat with the video’s release soon.

“Type Dangerous” marks Carey’s latest musical release following last year’s standalone single “Portrait.” The highly anticipated MC16 also follows the release of 2018’s Caution, which was met with critical and commercial acclaim upon release — even debuting at number five on the US Billboard 200.

In other news, Carey accepted the BET Ultimate Icon Award yesterday (June 9), which celebrated her status as one of the greatest pop artists of all time. “This means so much, especially coming from BET,” said the pop star during her speech. “My life and career have been quite the adventure. I will spare you the long, drawn-out saga tonight. It’s all in my book anyway,” she joked.

“It took me a while, but I finally realized life is far too short to live for anyone else’s approval, which is something I always did,” she emphasized. Carey then stressed the importance of self-love and individuality, encouraging fans to “be a diva, be a boss, be anything you wanna be. But be iconic while you’re doing it.
