“Music is the type of energy you cannot just put in a box, for it transcends its listeners and goes across several generations.”

These are the words Gary Valenciano spoke, right as he began the initial moments of his last major solo concert. Celebrating forty years in the entertainment industry as one of the most dynamic performers in the Philippine music scene is surely no easy feat, but from what we’ve witnessed at Valenciano’s third and final ‘Pure Energy: One Last Time‘ concert series –– he makes it look like an absolute breeze.

Over the last two weeks, Valenciano has been commemorating his momentous career with quite a bang, performing in a series of sold-out concerts that encompass the four decades of his storied career. In the previous two shows, he’s already proven that his stage presence is bound to be irreplaceable, but this last one hits differently for a vastly disparate reason. Valenciano’s third ‘Pure Energy’ concert not only showcased the singer’s unparalleled talent, unwavering dedication, and boundless energy on stage, but it also allowed him to deliver an experience that transcended time and touched the hearts of everyone in attendance.

Rarely would you find yourself amongst a sea of people that ranged from ages 16 to 60, with the diverse demographic proving just how universally Valenciano’s music has resonated across various generations. Talking to some fans present, many of them emphasized just how significant of a role his music plays in their lives.

“I think the reason why I’m able to resonate with him and why he’s reached so many generations is that he actually means what he sings—  as if each song is a fortune cookie that when opened, shares a message that you just know was genuinely crafted to see”, said 25-year-old Diego Ramirez.  Whether it’s the music that they grew up with or the songs they’ve formed a connection to, all of them agree that it’s Valenciano’s impassioned delivery that adds an authentic nature to each and every one of his performances.

The show opened with an electrifying number of “Shout For Joy” that saw Valenciano bursting onto the stage from below with the perfectly apt enthusiasm that has become synonymous with his name ‘Mr. Energy’. It was a moment that set the tone for what would be a night to remember —a night that was set to be filled with music, memories, and moments of pure magic.

Throughout the evening, Valenciano treated the audience to a journey through his longevity on the scene, bringing together a whole tapestry of songs that spanned genres and generations, which applied. From emotional ballads (“Kailangan Kita”) to energetic anthems (“Growing Up”), Valenciano’s setlist was a testament to the depth and diversity of his musical talent. One of the highlights of the concert was Valenciano’s collaboration with his first special guest, Zsa Zsa Padilla. Together, they delivered a stirring rendition of “Could We,” a song that holds a special place in the hearts of fans who have followed Valenciano’s career since the beginning. It was a moment of pure magic –– one that reminded everyone in attendance why Valenciano is considered one of the greatest performers of his generation.

But it wasn’t just Valenciano’s vocal prowess that impressed; it was also his incredible dance choreography, which drew comparisons to legends like Michael Jackson from the audience. With each move, Valenciano commanded the stage with a grace and precision that left the audience in awe. Interwoven with the music were moments of reflection, as the award-winning singer shared personal anecdotes and stories from his decades-long career. From his collaborations with renowned musicians to his experiences performing around the world, Valenciano opened up to the audience about his insight into the highs and lows of life as a performer—a life filled with passion, dedication, and an unwavering faith in the power of music.

Aside from Padilla, Valenciano was joined on stage by a host of special guests, including the P-Pop group BGYO for “Hataw Na”, celebrated hip-hop icon Gloc-9 for “Walang Pumapalakpak”, together with a surprise appearance from South Border’s Jay Durias for a stripped down rendition to “I Will Be Here”. Together, each of these guests brought a remarkable and unique form of energy to the stage ––  reminding everyone just how versatile Valenciano’s music is in his ability to adapt across various genres and musical influences over time.

As another testament to his versatility, one of the most powerful moments of the evening came when Valenciano was joined by his choir for a soul-stirring performance to “Lead Me Lord” that brought the audience to their feet. It was a celebration of the singer’s faith that transformed the arena into a sea of swaying lights, showcasing just how significant of an impact Valenciano’s music and ability to integrate his faith into his career has had on people’s lives, which serves as a reminder of the power of music to uplift, inspire, and unite.

But perhaps one of the most poignant moments of the evening was when Valenciano was joined on stage by his family, including his children Kiana and Gab and his nephew and niece Gio and Lianna Martinez. From their inspired performances of Jackson 5 classics to heartfelt duets with his daughter Kiana and his best friend Martin Nievera, these moments served as a reminder of the importance of family and faith in Valenciano’s life and career.

“What an evening this has turned out to be. I’ve been inspired largely by you guys, my audience, as well as performing with my bro, Martin, and my daughter Kiana, who let me sing what I feel.” Valenciano mentioned. “I’d also like to thank the one guy who never likes being acknowledged, my son Paolo, for making this a night to remember. Thank you, son,” he continued.

As the concert drew to a close, Valenciano took a moment to reflect on the significance of the evening. In a touching speech, he explained the meaning behind the concert title, “Pure Energy: One Last Time,” revealing that it was inspired by an epiphany he had from God about the finite nature of his ability to perform with such grandeur. Despite his gratitude (and excellence) over these years of performing, he acknowledged that his body could no longer keep up with the demands of the stage.

Going around the arena to express his gratitude to the fans, Valenciano made his way around the entire Lower Box section, shaking hands and sharing hugs with all the people who made the effort to come out and celebrate the beloved icon’s final performance on the grand stage. Several tears were shed as the entire crowd in attendance witnessed this bittersweet moment, yet in a way, such acknowledgment signified the perfect capstone to Valenciano’s impact in the lives of several generations of listeners.

As the concert drew to a close, Valenciano took a moment to reflect on the significance of the evening. For him, he mentions how this concert was not a farewell (as he wasn’t going to retire anytime soon!); but it was a celebration of a lifetime of memories, moments, and music. And as he bid farewell to the stage, he did so with a sense of gratitude and humility, thanking his fans for their unwavering support and love –– signing off with a poignant performance to “Take Me Out Of The Dark.”

More than just any concert, Valenciano’s ‘Pure Energy: One Last Time’ show was more than just any musical event –– but a celebration of the singer’s legacy, one that will continue to inspire and uplift generations to come. It went beyond a form of mere entertainment, giving everyone in attendance a first-hand look at an icon’s lasting ode to his career. As Valenciano took his last bow, he did so knowing that his music would continue to live on forever in the hearts of those whom its magic has touched. And for that, we can all be grateful.

While Valenciano’s final bow on the major stage may have brought tears to many eyes, we’re sure that his legacy will continue to shine bright for years to come (perhaps with some new projects and endeavors on the way). Because as one chapter ends –– another begins, and the spirit of Pure Energy lives on.
