Tilly Birds are bringing back the ’00s with their latest release.
Today (October 1), the Thai alt-pop trio made their return with a new single, “Retro 39.” This marks the group’s sophomore English release, as the group remarked in an official press release that they wanted to switch up their sound in favor of a lighter appeal. Through this fresh drop, the group — composed of members Billy, Milo, and Third — aims to showcase their growth and make audiences relive the early 21st century nostalgia.
When speaking on their new creative direction on “Retro 39,” the group’s drummer Milo said, “Songs are like people; they age. This song made us realize that we’re growing up, and that we needed to make music that matches where we are in our lives right now.” In light of its easygoing themes, the song’s music video gives nods to classic early-2000s romcoms like (500) Days of Summer, About Time, There’s Something About Mary, and Love Actually.
This follows their single “White Pills” that was dropped earlier in April of this year — their previous fully-English release that has become a staple in their performance set lists.
