Orange & Lemons just dropped a brand new music video.

On September 20, the Filipino indie veterans premiered the music video for their track “La Bulaqueña” — the title track of their fifth full-length album, released in 2022. It stars their fellow Bulacan native, Miss Universe Philippines 2024 Chelsea Manalo.

The music video — with a concept and direction by Everywhere We Shoot — sees “parallel storylines of [the band] and Manalo and how they were deeply connected together by a turn-of-the-century portraiture called Una Bulaqueña in terms of geographic affinity and influence.” The painting in the music video was created by historically renonwed painter, sculptor, activist Juan Luna y Novicio or simply, Juan Luna. It is described as carrying an “unassuming naturalness that depicts a Filipina from an elite countryside background, one who is assumed to be from Bulacan.”

“The symbolic repetition of the painting deepens the narrative and signifies the theme,” explains Orange & Lemons’ frontman Clem Castro.

The team-up between the band and Manalo originates back to the latter’s Miss Universe Philippines campaign days. This was when Manalo’s team used “La Bulaqueña” to serve as the background music for a conceptual photoshoot, showcasing Manalo in a depiction of the subject in aforementioned painting. This shoot then went viral on various social media platforms, leading to Orange & Lemons to join forces with the beauty queen and eventually bringing the music video to life.

“Working with Chelsea was a breeze,” stated Castro by sharing how Manalo was “a natural behind the lens and a jolly individual,” describing her as “a true beauty queen, both inside and out.”

For the music video, the “Hanggang Kailan” hitmakers also teamed up with the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila City, with the art gallery serving as the music video’s setting. Orange & Lemons are notably the first band to ever shoot a music video inside the museum and serves to fulfill the band’s dream project of “mixing music, culture, arts, architecture, and pageantry in a contemporary setting and theme.”

“Our team and label did a couple of inquiries, and the stars aligned,” shares Castro expressing the band’s gratitude towards the museum for being game to collaborate with them for the project.

In other news, Orange & Lemons are set to celebrate their 25th anniversary this year by holding a special show, dubbed “Now & Then: Orange & Lemons 25th Anniversary Concert.” It is set to happen this October 18 at the Metrotent Convention Center in Pasig City. Find out more about the concert here.
