Japanese Breakfast have finally released their highly-anticipated fourth album, titled For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women).
Produced by Blake Mills (Perfume Genius, Fiona Apple), the newly released record from the beloved indie-pop band is lush and layered with intricate musical arrangements that feel simultaneously as whimsical as it does introspective. With credit to frontwoman Michelle Zauner’s penchant for storytelling, every track on this record is rich with experience — moving from page to melody to encapsulate listeners into the gorgeous world that she’s conjured up for this album.
For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) comprises ten tracks, including the previously released singles “Orlando In Love” and “Mega Circuit” –– both of which received critical acclaim upon their initial release. Both tracks were also released with accompanying music videos, which will soon be followed up by another one scheduled to be released later today for the track titled “Picture Window.” Zauner teased the upcoming music video on her social media platforms with a brief snippet, also announcing that it stars Balming Tiger’s Omega Sapien and model/artist Gyuri Kim. Make sure to stay tuned at this space for more updates as to when exactly it will be released.
The newly released record marks the long-awaited follow-up to 2021’s Jubilee –– which went on to receive universal acclaim from both critics and commercial audiences as the band’s first album to debut on the Billboard 200 chart (peaking at No. 56). In the same year of its release, Zauner also released her memoir, Crying in H Mart, which received rave reviews from various publications and was selected as one of The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Time Magazine‘s best books of the year.
Also recently, Zauner released her own pop rendition of “Ballad Of The Witches Road” for the soundtrack to Marvel’s Agatha All Along television series. She, along with the band, are also set to have an original song as part of the original soundtrack to Celine Song and A24’s upcoming romantic comedy film, The Materialists.
Later this year, Japanese Breakfast are scheduled to go on tour in support of the upcoming record –– beginning with performances on both weekends of the 2025 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, followed by shows across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, and the rest of Europe, with a number of other music festival stops along the way.
