Formed in 2010, BABYMETAL were originally a sub-unit of school-themed J-pop girl group Sakura Gakuin, before becoming an independent act altogether after lead vocalist Suzuka Nakamoto’s (Su-metal) graduation from the group in 2013. BABYMETAL first achieved international breakthrough success with their song “Gimme Chocolate!!” which went viral online and introduced them to both metal and non-metal fans alike.
The group was originally composed of Nakamoto, alongside fellow vocalists Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) and Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal). Mizuno departed from the group in 2018 due to health-related reasons, with BABYMETAL continuing as a duo, while being backed by different dancers in Mizuno’s place. One of these dancers was Momoko Okazaki, another Sakura Gakuin alumna, who would eventually join the group officially in April 2023 as Momometal.
BABYMETAL are best known for such hits as “Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!,” “Karate,” “Megitsune,” “RATATATA” with German electronicore band Electric Callboy, and more. They recently joined forces with experimental pop-metal singer Poppy on “from me to u” and are set to release a collaboration single with Russian deathcore band Slaughter To Prevail, entitled “Song 3,” on May 28, 2025 (Wednesday).
