Mercy Sunot of iconic rock band Aegis has passed away at the age of 48.
The veteran vocalist passed away on the morning of November 18, 2024 (Monday), with the band releasing a heartfelt statement on their official social media to confirm the news.
“Mercy’s voice wasn’t just a part of Aegis — it was a voice that brought comfort, joy, and strength to so many,” the band said, noting how Sunot has “touched countless lives, inspiring fans and lifting spirits with every song she sang.”
“Her passion, warmth, and unforgettable presence on stage will forever be cherished in our hearts,” they continued, asking fans to “come together to celebrate the incredible life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind.” “Mercy, thank you for the music, the love, and the memories. You will be deeply missed.”
On November 17 (Sunday), a day before her passing, Sunot had posted a TikTok video asking for prayers from her followers and the general public after she underwent a lung surgery needed in her battle with breast and lung cancer. She revealed that following the surgery, she suddenly had difficulty breathing so she was taken to the ICU, where it was discovered that her lungs were filled with water and suffering from inflammation.
Prior to Sunot’s passing, Aegis was composed of her and siblings Juliet Sunot and Ken Sunot on lead vocals, keyboardist Stella Pabico, vocalist and lead guitarist Rey Abenoja, bassist Rowena Adriano, and drummer Vilma Goloviogo.
Rising to fame in the ’90s, Aegis are best known for such hits as “Halik,” “Luha,” “Basang-Basa Sa Ulan,” and more. Just last year, they celebrated their 25th anniversary with a special Christmas concert at The Theatre at Solaire in Parañaque City. A few days before Mercy Sunot’s passing, the band had announced a Valentine’s concert scheduled for February 1 and 2, 2025 at the New Frontier Theater in Quezon City.
