For the 5SOS Fam, the gifts keep on giving. 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) have dropped their surprise single, “Boyband.”
The track follows the band’s new era, which began with the release of their comeback single “NOT OK” on September 25 — their new music in three years — along with the announcement of their sixth studio album, Everyone’s a Star!, set for release on November 14.
“Boyband” was performed live for the first time during a free pop-up show in Los Angeles that celebrated the new era and album. Two weeks later, on October 9, a snippet of the song was released on social media platforms such as TikTok.
It is a high-energy, synth-heavy track that marks 5SOS’ return to their pop-punk sound. Additionally, it focuses on them fully embracing the “boy band” label they have been tagged for years.
“We’ve always been called a boyband, and this song is about us owning that narrative and taking the power back,” the band collectively shares in an official statement.
Additionally, the track highlights their continued evolution as they delve more deeply into darker themes that were previously lightly explored in their earlier eras. On the surface, it talks about the glitz and glamour of being in the public eye, but ultimately delves into the downsides and harsh realities of living too much in the spotlight.
From lyrics like “Love me when I’m skinny and we never, ever age,” and “Make me the flavor of the week,” to “Boy in a boyband / Make that monkey dance,” the song reflects the tension-filled rollercoaster between fame and authenticity.
