The story of up-and-coming artists is one always marked by one thing: exploration.

Signed under Northern Root Records, Filipino-Canadian artist Shayne Carmel‘s story is no different. The Cagayana singer-songwriter continues to refine her sound even now as she roams the streets of Toronto. In the previous years she released such singles as “Ruthless,” “Enough,” “RAIN,” and “Toronto.”

As a songwriter, her lyricism explores a variety of aspects of her life, from her faith to her environment. “I draw my creative inspiration from a blend of raw, true-to-life experiences and the vivid fictional narratives that take shape within my imagination,” Carmel said.

Her songs “Ruthless” and “Enough” bring refreshing spins on contemporary Christian music with jazz harmonies that accompany Carmel’s R&B-infused vocals. Amid these elements is a lo-fi soundscape providing these tracks a calming ambience.

On seeking novelty in her sound, Carmel shared, “My goal is to craft relatable music that resonates with the pulse of current trends while maintaining an authentic emotional core.”

Carmel is not afraid to experiment with sound. A testament to this is her 2022 single “RAIN,” a collaboration with Ruth Lee Resuello and Millennium PH. It’s a track that uses rain as a motif both to describe the process of falling in love (“I’m falling like / Rain, Rain”) and to paint a picture of those cozy moments snuggling in the cool indoors during rainy days. Despite its sentimental themes, Carmel approaches the song with keenly rhythmic vocals.

In contrast to “RAIN,” the singer switches up her prior lo-fi sound for one of acoustic strings with her 2024 single “Toronto.” The track explores Carmel’s unfamiliarity with her new surroundings before her eventual love for the city. The acoustic strings add an especially homey feel to the song.

To date, Carmel continues to experiment with musical possibilities. Speaking on her musical explorations, she said, “I have meticulously refined my artistic identity by studying the industry’s finest: drawing from Lauv’s innovative music production, Ariana Grande’s vocal prowess, and Taylor Swift’s masterful approach to songwriting to cultivate a sound that is uniquely my own.”
