Today, July 9, 2026 (PH Time), Welsh singer-songwriter Bonnie Tyler has passed away at the age of 75.

Known for her ’80s hits “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” Tyler’s official Facebook page shared a statement that read: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in a hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly, but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

In March of this year, Tyler was rushed to a hospital near her home in Faro, Portugal, and was placed in an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery. She was set to continue her ‘Jubilee 2026 Tour’ across Europe, with stops in Germany, Switzerland, Romania, and Turkey. The tour was intended to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her breakthrough 1976 hit, “Lost in France.”

Tyler started her music career in the 1970s and rose to prominence for her powerful, husky vocals, which ultimately became her signature sound across pop-rock, soft rock, and power ballads. In the 1980s, she later broke into the international mainstream scene with her hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” earning her Grammy Award nominations.

With her 1983 album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, she made history as the first British female artist to debut at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. This was followed by “Holding Out for a Hero,” released in 1984 and included on the soundtrack of the film Footloose.

She has also released other notable tracks, including “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man),” “Hide Your Heart,” and “Bitterblue.”
