With the Filipino music as vibrant as ever, there’s a continuous wave of rising artists making their mark in the scene in their own distinctive ways. Each passing year is another opportunity to discover a new artist to soundtrack your days and freshen up your music rotation.

So, as we’re mere days away from the new year, the Billboard Philippines team present our picks for homegrown acts that everyone should definitely keep on their radar.

Nameless Kids

From empowering anthems that make you feel like you can take on an entire city to emotional ballads about unrequited love, Nameless Kids‘ discography is a whirlwind of heartfelt stories on modern romance and blooming aspirations told against intoxicating electro-pop melodies. They’re fun, relatable, and undeniably catchy. They’re also the kind of band whose recordings do no justice to the talent and charm that they have on a live stage. So, if you’re looking for a new band to listen to in the new year, Nameless Kids are definitely one to watch out for.

SHANNi

SHANNi is a new artist to the scene but one we should all be watching out for. In her debut single, “sa panaginip” to her name (so far), the young singer-songwriter weaves together a dreamy mix of jazz and pop that left many of us wanting more — and here’s to hoping, there is indeed more coming up in 2024.

PRY

Back in the early 1990s, the Washington DC punk scene formed a kinship with the riot grrrl bands that mostly came out of the Pacific Northwest. PRY closely approximates the sound of both scenes melded together, with intense, Bikini Kill-style vocals over dynamic Fugazi-ish riffing. Their debut album The Party’s Over went largely ignored by the local music media, but those who’ve heard it and seen this veritable punk supergroup (the members come from Lindenwood, Tidal, Deadyears, and others) live know that this is one band to watch in the coming years.

ALYSON

City-pop sounds and light brown-colored suits. This odd (yet distinct) pairing is what defines one of Offshore Music’s latest artists, ALYSON, who’ve come on to the scene with their charming demeanor and passion for music. Their first album, DEFINITELY LOVE!, was released earlier this year and captured the hearts of numerous listeners with their infectious sound. For sure, ALYSON is headed for bigger things moving forward, and we look forward to whatever comes next from the group.

VXON

If anything, VXON’s latest release “Sandal” proves that they’re not just any P-Pop group. Other groups may use rap in their songs, but VXON is kalye hip-hop through and through. In the lead up to their album next year, the group plans to lean into their influences in the local hip-hop scene like Flow G, Skusta Clee, and Shanti Dope to create a truly unique P-Pop sound.

Amateurish

@amateurishph

Are they happy? Are they sad? Are they a mix of emotions that we aren’t supposed to define? Today, more than ever we are seeing bands break the molds of genres, taking influences and real life moments, throwing it all in a blender, and pouring us up a tall glass of something fresh. Tension and release are key to the instrumentation when we talk about Amateurish, giving us something to bounce to or drift away with, this apparent back and forth pulling us farther into welcomed spaced out dazes. With each release staying true to a goal while still leaving space to explore the unknown, this is a band to keep on the radar.

YGIG

YGIG

@ygig.official

Just a little over a year ago, P-pop girl group YGIG made their debut with their hip-hop inflected “SHABA SHABA”.  The single set the tone of their unique sound thus far — edgy, dark, and full of girl power. They marked a shift in how P-Pop girl groups could sound, and we’re all here for it. If you’re a fan of the likes of BLACKPINK and ITZY, YGIG is right up your alley.
