Nine Inch Nails are set to provide the music for a highly anticipated sci-fi movie sequel.
On August 10, the veteran industrial rock band — officially composed of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — announced their involvement as composers for the original score of the sci-fi film TRON: Ares. It will serve as the third movie in Disney’s TRON franchise, following TRON (1982) and TRON: Legacy (2010).
TRON: Ares marks the first time the Oscar-winning Reznor and Ross will be credited as Nine Inch Nails for composing a film score, raising excitement as to how the music for TRON: Ares will be different from their previous work as composers. The announcement comes after the duo’s widely praised original score for Challengers (2024) starring Zendaya.
Before Nine Inch Nails’ involvement in the franchise’s music, the score to TRON was created by composer Wendy Carlos (who also worked on the music for Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and The Shining) while the music for TRON: Legacy was crafted by electronic music duo Daft Punk.
Alongside a first look at the film from Disney last February 29, director Joachim Rønning stated, “I’m excited to be part of the TRON franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. TRON: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”
Set to be released on October 10, 2025, the film stars musician-actor Jared Leto of 30 Seconds To Mars in the titular role of Ares. His character is described by Disney as “a highly sophisticated Program” that is “sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.” Leto — who also serves as one of the film’s producers — will be joined by Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, as well as Jeff Bridges, who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn, the protagonist of TRON.
