New Sinéad O’Connor Biopic Officially In The Works

A feature film exploring the early life and career of the late Sinéad O’Connor is in development, with Josephine Decker attached to direct and writer Stacey Gregg penning the script.

Decker previously directed the biographical drama Shirley and the coming-of-age romantic drama The Sky Is Everywhere.

Produced by Irish production companies ie: entertainment, See-Saw Films, and Nine Daughters, the project will follow O’Connor’s early years in Dublin, her rise to global fame, and her outspoken activism — such as speaking out against sexism in the music industry and corruption in the Catholic Church.

The biopic follows the 2022 documentary Nothing Compares, directed by Kathryn Ferguson. As of this writing, the project has yet to receive an official title and an announced cast.

The Irish singer died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma in July 2023 at the age of 56.

She became an icon of Irish culture and a trailblazer for women in music. Her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got — which included her massive hit single “Nothing Compares 2 U,” a cover of a Prince song — earned her a Grammy Award at just 23 years old.

Beyond music, she defied industry norms with her iconic shaved head, fearless, activism, and outspoken critiques. She once famously tore a photo of Pope John Paul II during a 1992 episode of Saturday Night Live as an act of protest against the Catholic Church’s abuse scandals.
