Pop icon Lady Gaga takes on a whole new persona in the latest footage released from the highly anticipated film, Joker: Folie à Deaux.
The recently released photos from the forthcoming musical were posted on Instagram by director Todd Philips, and were shared with the caption “Hoping your day is full of love. 10.4.24”. Philips will continue his helm at the director’s chair following his nomination as Best Director at the 2019 Oscars for the film’s predecessor. All three photos that were shared showcase Lady Gaga sharing various scenes with Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix, including one behind bars and another dancing together on a rooftop.
Though we’re used to seeing Gaga evolve in both style and image for every album she releases, the world hasn’t seen her like how she is in the upcoming movie. The beloved pop star will be portraying the iconic DC character of Harley Quinn, while Phoenix reprises his role as the titular character, Joker. Previously released images from the film have focused on Gaga’s new look, showing her with smudged makeup in an elevator, and another lovingly gazing at Phoenix’s the Joker.
In other news, Gaga has been teasing new music on the way for quite some time, which will mark her first major release since her 2020 album, Chromatica. The pop star has been posting photos from the studio, and even jokingly clarified the speculations of her fans (dubbed “Little Monsters”) by saying “No, I’m not making a rock album.”
Gaga’s appearance as Harley Quinn in the upcoming film marks her second leading role in a major motion picture, following her Academy Award-nominated role as Ally in 2018’s A Star Is Born, and her Golden-Globe award-winning portrayal as The Countess in Ryan Murphy’s fifth season of American Horror Story. Joker: Folie à Deaux is currently scheduled for release this upcoming October 4, 2024, and will be distributed globally by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film, which was announced to be a musical, will continue the story of its 2018 predecessor –– which grossed over one billion dollars at the global box office.
As fans anticipate the release of both Joker 2 and Lady Gaga’s new album on the way, feel free to revisit planet Chromatica in the meantime:
