DreamWorks Animation’s fantasy adventure comedy, Forgotten Island, featuring the voices of Grammy- and Academy Award-winning artist H.E.R., Liza Soberano, and Lea Salonga, has released its official trailer.
Set in the ’90s, the animated film features Filipino culture and centers on high school graduates Jo (H.E.R.) and Raissa (Soberano) as they take on new chapters in their lives separately, accidentally traveling to the mysterious island of Nakali, where it is populated by Filipino mythical creatures. They stumble upon a weredog named Raww (Dave Franco) and the island’s most feared creature, The Dreaded Manananggal (Salonga).
It is directed by Academy Award nominee Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, the director-writer duo who helmed the acclaimed DreamWorks Animation film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
The film marks H.E.R.’s first venture into voice acting and animation. In an interview with Variety, the Filipino-American singer-songwriter talked about being excited when she first received the script that centered on Filipino heritage. Having grown up on scary stories featuring Filipino creatures and folklore, she said she gets to add a piece of her childhood to this project.
Soberano, who made her leap into Hollywood with the 2024 rom-com horror Lisa Frankenstein, shared with the publication that it had long been her dream to be part of a project that accurately and well-represented the Philippines while also being universal enough for others to relate to.
Forgotten Island also features a star-studded voice cast, including Dolly de Leon, Manny Jacinto, Jenny Slate, Jo Koy, and Ronny Chieng.
