Megumi Acorda have just dropped a surprise extended-play, titled Sun Blanket.
The newly released project sees the dream pop/shoegaze group playing within a more upbeat set of sounds, staying true to the warmth evoked by the record’s own title. According to singer/guitarist Megumi Acorda, this EP comprises “gritty guitar pop songs” which they “jokingly call ‘grit pop’,” with its four tracks written and produced by Megumi herself, alongside additional production by guitarist Kevin Ingco. Its cover artwork also features a film photograph taken by Megumi, with the model being her cat, Waruta.
In addition to the record’s surprise drop, a special lyric video was also released for the track “Copeland Heights,” which features compilation footage of the band across a variety of scenarios, including traveling in Japan, eating together, performing in gigs, and recording in the studio, among other vignettes. Check it out below:
Sun Blanket marks the first new release of Megumi Acorda in two years, following their critically acclaimed debut album, Silver Fairy. The record received recognition from both the local and international dream pop scene and spawned the beloved single “Feverfew.” It was also the long-awaited follow-up to their debut EP, Unexpectedly.
In 2024, the band released Silver Fairy on a variety of physical media platforms, including a deluxe CD (now sold out), cassette, and vinyl record variations. The vinyl release included three unique variants, which were available on standard black, opaque red, and a silver grey (true to the cover artwork of the album). All three vinyl variants are still available on Megumi Acorda’s official website here.
