“Kuryente” serves as the follow-up to Jolianne’s previous single “Favorite Friend,” which came out on June 27, 2025. Notably, the new single was co-written by Miguel Benjamin of folk-popFolk-PopA style that blends the acoustic instruments and storytelling of folk with the melodies and polish of pop. In the Philippines, folk-pop has a long history through songwriters and bands,Go to Folk-Pop Glossary icons Ben&Ben, serving as “a love letter to his wife” and takes inspiration from “the couple’s intimate anecdotes, where they feel tiny jolts of static electricity whenever their hands touch.”
“That inspired me to make and produce this playful song about how infatuation and early romance feels. I really wanted to hit the right balances of expressing who I was through my musical background,” shares Ziv in a press statement. “Being Korean yet being born here in the Philippines, I wanted to find the right balance of putting both of those influences into the production, which I feel makes it unique.”
Meanwhile, for Jolianne, in order to fully embody the song’s themes, this meant “channeling innocence, excitement, and the thrill of being lit up by someone’s presence.” Additionally, recording the song also provided a challenge for the singer, especially in terms of her vocals. “Vocally, this was one of the more challenging songs I’ve put out because it pushed me to access my voice in a different way,” shares Jolianne. “From a technical
standpoint, I experimented a lot with dynamics and registers. And of course, singing in Tagalog also shaped the way I sounded here, adding another layer of character to the performance.”
“There’s a blend of ease and tension that I always want to include in my productions. And so the groove, blended with the romantic feel, was what I went for in this arrangement,” states Ziv on the creation of the track, which notably sees him blend together his “soulful and Korean R&B-style production” with Jolianne’s signature “silky, infectious vocals.”
