Phum Viphurit, or Paul Vibhavadi rather, is back with new music.
Today (September 24), the Thai indie singer-songwriter released a fresh new single “The Other Side” — a transcendent indie funk track. In tandem with this single, Phum is set to release a music video on his YouTube channel soon. To usher in this new era of Phum, the artist took to Instagram to preview his incumbent identity and alter-ego of Paul Vibhavadi in a humorous, somewhat cryptic series of posts.
Along with this alternate identity, Phum Viphurit is experimenting with a new beat altogether. “For the longest time I’ve been into an early 2000s house and I always knew that I wanted to incorporate my guitar playing into that type of BPM,” said Phum. On that note, this fresh sound marks the first teaser of his upcoming EP, Paul Vibhavadi Vol. 1, which is scheduled for release on October 17.
In an official press release, Phum shared more about his new character, Paul: “He’s basically a hybrid of Sloth and human who tries his best to fit into city life and the pacing of it. But he’s a sloth, he’s not meant to be in the city.” The new single accompanies Paul on a mythical journey of self-discovery in seeking where he truly belongs. “He finds a mythical map to Himmapan, this magical forest in Buddhist culture that is neither heaven nor hell. It’s a peaceful limbo where time doesn’t move and he can just exist in peace and solitude, and that’s all a sloth wants,” he continues.
This follows the artist’s collaboration with the self-proclaimed “Marina pop” band, PREP, in their single, “Getaway“.
