Following years of disputes with her previous label, Sky Ferreira is finally free and taking full control over her career with her new single “Leash.”

The newly released track serves as the lead single off the soundtrack to A24 and Halina Reijn’s upcoming film, Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman, Harrison Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, and Sophie Wilde. Ferreira herself is no stranger to the world of film though — given her experience starring in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver (wherein she covered The Commodores’ classic track “Easy” for its soundtrack) and also in Eli Roth’s horror flick The Green Inferno.

The single also serves as Ferreira’s first release as an independent musician — and her latest since 2022’s “Don’t Forget,” which marked her last release under Capitol Records. The alternative-pop singer has had a complicated relationship with Capitol, following years of supposed “sabotage” and control over her career that has prevented Ferreira from dropping any proper releases since her 2013 debut album, Night Time, My Time.

“It feels liberating [to be independent], but I’m honestly still angry about the situation,” Ferreira told Vogue in an exclusive interview released earlier this week. “It felt like their way of trying to break my spirit one last time. Capitol would’ve never let me do something like this Babygirl song,” she continued.

Speaking about the release of “Leash,” the musician opened up about how freeing it feels to put out such a track after all this time. “It feels good. It’s a little daunting because I haven’t put anything out by myself since I was, I don’t know, 17 years old? I’m putting it out with A24, so it’s not totally independent, but I’m very excited. It sorta feels like a fresh start for me in some capacity, at least compared to what I’ve been through for the past 10 years.”

Ferreira first made waves on the international stage with the release of her first (and only) album, Night Time, My Time, which was received with critical acclaim both during the time of its release and in the succeeding years since. The record spawned a series of hit singles, including “Everything Is Embarrassing” and “You’re Not The One,” which established the singer-songwriter as a cult favorite amongst audiences worldwide.

With her long-teased sophomore album, Masochism, (supposedly) finally on the way in 2025. “Leash” is merely the beginning of Ferreira’s next chapter of her career, with a new single and upcoming live tour set to keep her preoccupied in the next few months.
