Marking a defining moment for Asian pop, P-pop powerhouse SB19 and J-pop hitmakers BE:FIRST join forces on their new single, “Toyfriend,” uniting their respective genres, countries, and fandoms in one cross-cultural release.

During the recording process, both groups found common ground in their shared dedication to the craft.During a roundtable interview with both acts, SB19 leader Pablo highlighted the Japanese group’s attentive approach to language and delivery, stating, “It was amazing during the recording session because we were able to refine the process of how to record the song. Since English is their second language, they really asked for a teacher who can really teach them how to pronounce the words — just so they could deliver the message clearly.”

He added that the experience was mutual, noting how both groups are continuously refining their vocal techniques and performance skills. “It was really great to see how hands-on they are. I think it was a great opportunity to collaborate with BE:FIRST.”

For BE:FIRST, the collaboration was equally transformative. Member LEO expressed admiration for the Philippines’ deep-rooted musical culture, sharing, “Having the collaboration with them, we really learned a lot. The Philippines is very much known for their dance and their musicality. I believe music really lies deep in the Philippines.” Praising SB19’s stage presence and connection with fans, the group also noted how their energy and talent are what draws audiences in.

Beyond the studio, “Toyfriend” is also bridging the two group’s respective fandoms, A’TIN and BESTY. SB19’s Stell reflected on how their music has encouraged fans to step outside their comfort zone. “One thing I noticed is that fans tell us that because of SB19, they gained the courage to explore different genres,” he said, adding that it’s especially meaningful knowing this impact came from “Toyfriend,” which is something the group genuinely wanted to work on.

On the experience of expanding their reach and connecting with new audiences, Stell recalled a meaningful encounter with a Japanese fan during their Pagtatag! tour — an interaction that underscored how music can transcend language barriers and national borders. BE:FIRST’s RYUHEI echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how “music breaks walls,” and how collaborations like this help remove boundaries that never needed to exist in the first place. He added, “It becomes an inspiration to the listener’s life. It will be something that will add excitement and joy to their life. Being able to have that through this collaboration is a very honorable thing for us.”
