We’ll keep dancing until we’re dead. Lady Gaga has dropped an infectious pop anthem with “The Dead Dance,” which is featured on the second part of Season 2 of the hit Netflix series, Wednesday.
The release comes after Netflix revealed the first look of the “Abracadabra” singer as Rosaline Rotwood, a long-dead psychic Raven and Nevermore teacher who previously taught Wednesday’s Grandmama Hester Frump.
The track was developed while working on material in Mayhem and was written by Gaga, Andrew Watt, and Henry Walter. Additionally, Gaga produced it with her fellow Mayhem contributors Watt and Cirkut.
On August 23, Gaga made a virtual appearance to interact with fans during Roblox’s Dress to Impress meet & greet and Q&A session, where she teased lyrics from the song through the chat feature, saying, “TOTAL MAYHEM in here, who is excited for THE DEAD DANCE,” and “You’ve created a creature of the night, now I’m haunting your air, your soul, your eyes.”
In an official press release, the Grammy-winning singer shared that the inspiration for the song was a breakup, “and it was all about the way that we sometimes feel when it’s over; how a relationship ending can kill our ability to feel hopeful about love.”
She adds that the song isn’t just about the relationship but also about having fun with friends when all’s been said and done, as well as the aftermath of going through something “tough and amazing.”
