Fresh off her very first GRAMMY win, Doechii has dropped a brand new single, titled “Nosebleeds.”
The newly released track sees the celebrated rap sensation spitting bars in an impeccable flow that could be likened to what made the majority of Nicki Minaj’s early discography so great, while also setting itself apart sonically from her award-winning mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal. With a lyricism that celebrates her win, it’s a perfect display of Doechii’s confidence and charisma –– almost as if it were an unfiltered extension of her acceptance speech.
The surprise release comes following the conclusion of the 67th GRAMMY Awards proper, wherein many of the industry’s biggest and brightest acts came together to celebrate the wealth of music releases over the past year. Doechii’s win for the Best Rap Album category marks the third time a woman has won in the category, following the likes of Cardi B and Lauryn Hill.
“This category was introduced in 1989 and two women have won,” Doechii began her acceptance speech before correcting herself. “Three women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii.I’ve put my heart and my soul into this mixtape. I bared my life. I went through so much, I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me that I would be rewarded and that he would show me just how good it can get,” the rapper continued. “And I have to thank God. I need to thank my beautiful mother for coaching me…My fans to the swamp,” she concluded.
Even while taking photographs at the photo podium backstage, Doechii went on to talk about what the award means to her and women like her who love the genre. “I know there is some Black girl out there [watching] and I want to tell you that you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes onto you. You are exactly who you need to be to where you are, and I am a testimony” to that,” she said.
Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal spawned the hit single “DENIAL IS A RIVER,” which continues to hit new peaks on various streaming and digital platforms as a viral sensation of its own. During the awards show ceremony, the 26-year-old rapper performed a medley of the track with another song off the record, “CATFISH.” Speaking of the performance, she described it as “one of the most difficult performances” she had ever done as she “felt the need to push myself harder than I ever have before.”
