15 Rappers Defining The Southeast Asian Hip-Hop Scene

A song’s rhythm is often something we feel so deeply in our bodies that we sway and dance to the music. Because of this, rhythm can also be seen as universal, something we see in the globalization of hip-hop music, a genre predominantly characterized by rhythm.

Yet despite its universality, much of hip-hop around the world still has many unique and individual flavors to offer, ones that are often defined by region.

With this list, we’re highlighting just a portion of the myriad hip-hop talents that have been (re)defining the genre within Southeast Asia. From Juan Reza‘s infectious techno hooks to Flow G‘s hard, fast vocal explosions, here are some releases from the region’s top acts.

Rich Brian (Indonesia)

Rich Brian began his musical career as early as 2015, with the rapper releasing his debut single, “Dat $tick,” on SoundCloud in 2016. The single became a viral success and was later certified gold by the RIAA. However, it was his gritty style and the hard beats of his single “Run It” that launched Brian into mainstream success, with the song being featured in the soundtrack of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Dangrangto (Vietnam)

Released in 2023, “Love is” features rapper Dangrangto‘s soothing brand of rap and R&B. Dangrangto’s latest album, trái tim băng bó, released in June of this year, showcases his range as a rapper, shifting through slow, lyrical verses to grittier ones in other tracks.

Flow G (Philippines)

The sheer speed and uncompromising rhythm that Flow G‘s “Rapstar” displays are comparable to the likes of Eminem‘s “Rap God.” In an exclusive interview with Billboard Philippines, the rapper shared that it was this track that changed the trajectory of his career, and rightly so upon listening to it.

Skusta Clee (Philippines)

The signature mark that defines Skusta Clee amid his frequent genre jumping is his inclination toward the melodic. You see this in “Since Day One,” where the rapper-singer provides a lyrical counterpart to Flow G’s more rhythmic vocals. But a single track isn’t enough to get the whole picture; you have to listen to the artist’s other tracks to see his versatility.

SURIYA MQT (Thailand)

A member of Thai underground rap group MQT SQUAD, SURIYA MQT is most famous for his song “1 OF 1,” which showcases his distinct approach to hip-hop. Perhaps the most addicting part of the track is the chorus, where the rapper’s rhythms smoothly slide off the tongue and make you want to sway to the music.

VannDa (Cambodia)

Named as “one of Cambodia’s most exciting contemporary artists” by NME in 2022, VannDa reached acclaim with his 2021 release “Time To Rise,” which became a cultural phenomenon with its use of historical Khmer instruments amid the rapper’s brand of hip-hop. The single is an innovative blend of the modern and traditional that proves that you don’t always need the latest tech to make a great hit.

Juan Reza (Indonesia)

Juan Reza gained viral success with his 2024 release “PICA PICA.” Other than his lyrics and bright, jovial brand of hip-hop, Reza also manages to produce memorable, catchy beats that often serve as addicting hooks to his tracks. Reza’s output makes for fun listens, perfect for a walk on a sunny day.

Hev Abi (Philippines)

Hev Abi‘s “Alam Mo Ba Girl” is just one of the many tracks that brought the rapper to the Billboard Philippines charts. With its laid back atmosphere, the track showcases the rapper’s penchant for providing calm, cool vocals.

Low G (Vietnam)

Nguyen Hoang Long, better known as Low G, is a rapper whose tracks like “In Love” display his knack for rhythmic vocals laid over calm beats and audio backdrops. He is also a member of two groups, “Rap Nhà Làm” and “Nhà Hoá Học Đống Đa.”

ALYPH (Singapore)

Amid the track’s hard-hitting beats, ALYPH offers heart-rending vocals in his 2025 release, “Ingat.” Other tracks from his album The Storm showcase the rapper-singer’s serious brand of hip-hop and R&B.

La Mave (Philippines)

“Vibrate,” with its synths and interesting harmonies sounding in the backdrop, elicits an atmospheric mood. YUNGSTARR (Thailand)

YUNGSTARR‘s style can be recognized not only for smooth, flowing vocals but also for lo-fi backing tracks that give his tracks like “Satin” an ambient feel. Elsewhere, the hip-hop R&B artist’s tracks display impressive productions whose backtracks offer resonant soundscapes.

lucidrari (Malaysia)

Releasing his debut album corrupted at 16 in 2022, lucidrari can be recognized for hits like “GADISKU,” which feature the rapper’s mellow rhythm alongside infectiously addicting dance beats. If you’re a frequenter of the club scene, lucidrari’s music would be for you with its frequent EDM backdrops.

Nateman (Philippines)

Another rapper to be noted for his versatility would be Nateman. Particularly, the rapper’s discography showcases two extremes. The first is a smooth, R&B style of hip-hop seen in tracks like “Paboritong Pagkakamali.” His other side is characterized by raw, brutal vocals, which you find in releases like “KING” and “TMD.”
