It’s just a normal outing for Tom Cruise as he pulls off another death-defying stunt in the latest Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning trailer, which showcased more high-octane action sequences, major callbacks to previous films, and what may be Ethan Hunt’s riskiest mission yet.

Every new Mission: Impossible film treats us with a new take or arrangement of the iconic theme song originally composed and conducted by Lalo Schifrin. The scores for the two previous installments, 2018’s Fallout and 2023’s Dead Reckoning – Part One, were composed by Lorne Balfe.

After surviving a train crash in Dead Reckoning – Part One, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) discovers that the Entity, a rogue artificial intelligence (AI), has been stashed aboard an old Russian submarine. Meanwhile, Gabriel (Esai Morales), a rogue assassin from Hunt’s past, is also on the trail to retrieve the powerful weapon.

Although the trailer doesn’t fully reveal the film’s major plot points, it does highlight some of Hunt’s iconic moments from previous installments, including the CIA vault break-in in Mission: Impossible and the Kremlin bombing in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

The eighth, and possibly final, installment of the franchise also features returning stars Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), Esai Morales (La Bamba), Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire), and Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3).
