Tom Cruise appeared on the May 19, 2025 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, where he joined Fallon, The Roots, and fellow cast members in an a cappella version of the franchise’s theme song.
The vocal arrangement begins with Fallon and The Roots singing the first few notes of the song. In true Mission: Impossible fashion, Fallon takes off his mask to reveal he’s actually Cruise. The Hollywood megastar is later joined by the rest of the film’s cast to finish the a cappella performance.
This isn’t the first time Fallon and The Roots have done creative musical performances. During the pandemic, they teamed up with Brendon Urie for a “social distancing remix” of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
In 2023, they performed an a cappella version of the Super Mario Bros. theme song with the movie’s cast, and in 2015, they did the iconic Star Wars theme with the Force Awakens cast.

In the episode, Cruise also discussed inviting The Weeknd to the film’s premiere in New York. The Weeknd credited Cruise’s lip sync performance of “Can’t Feel My Face” in 2015 helped boost his early career. Additionally, Cruise also talked about how he keeps raising the bar with his stunt performances and undergoes intense physical training for the latest Mission: Impossible film.
The episode also featured the “What’s Behind Me?” segment, where guests guess funny or surprising scenes happening behind them based on audience reactions and clues. During the segment, Cruise and Fallon reunited an audience member with her son, who had been stationed in the Navy for the past two years.
