To mark their 50th anniversary, Talking Heads have released the first official music video for their iconic 1977 track, “Psycho Killer.” The video stars Academy Award-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan and is directed by Mike Mills (C’mon C’mon).
Originally released in 1977, “Psycho Killer” appeared on Talking Heads’ debut album, Talking Heads 77. The music video follows Ronan as he experiences a range of emotions over the course of two weeks, presented in a slice-of-life, day-by-day sequence.
In an interview with Letterboxd, Mills said, “There’s a fearlessness to the Talking Heads. A dedication to change. A dedication to not doing things in the standard way. A dedication to breaking the rules.” He shared how the films of Chantal Akerman, most notably her seminal Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, influenced his approach to the music video’s visual style and storytelling.
Talking Heads last performed together in 1984 and disbanded in 1991. Given that the band is celebrating their 50th anniversary, fans are expecting an announcement for a reunion tour with all founding members, David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth, Jerry Harrison. In 2023, they reunited for the A24 re-release of Stop Making Sense, regarded as one of the best concert films of all time.
In 2024, Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense was released, a tribute album to the concert film and live album of the same name, featuring Miley Cyrus’s cover of “Psycho Killer.”
