Ryan Gosling‘s latest science-fiction blockbuster, Project Hail Mary, has just hit cinemas in the Philippines –– and the film features an unexpected needle drop that is sure to delight fans of a certain major pop star.
In one of the film’s more lighthearted scenes, Harry Styles‘ debut solo single, “Sign Of The Times” makes a surprise appearance as the chosen karaoke song of one of the film’s characters, Eva Strait (portrayed by Sandra Hüller). Given the stoic (if cold) nature of Hüller’s character throughout the movie, it’s all the more amusing to see her perform the chart-topping pop song in such an inspired manner –– one that not only showcases her impressive vocal chops, but also her ability to sing it akin to a gospel choir –– making it a laugh-out-loud moment within the context of the film.
What makes this needle drop all the more fitting for the film is that Project Hail Mary features a premise of Gosling’s character embarking on a life-altering space voyage to prevent an impending apocalypse that will see the sun dying out. The film’s choice to utilize Styles’ hit song is a pitch-perfect choice given the track’s subject matter, but the manner in which it was weaved into the storyline gives it a fun, lighthearted touch that adds comedic value and meaning to both Gosling and Huller’s character journeys and motivation within the blockbuster.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Sony’s Spiderverse franchise, 21 Jump Street), Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling (Barbie, The Notebook, Drive) as Dr. Ryland Grace, an astronaut-molecular biologist on a quest to save humanity, alongside Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, Zone of Interest) as Eva Strait, Grace’s superior and the head of the fictional Hail Mary project. The film also stars Ken Leung (Industry), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), as well as cameos from Meryl Streep and Ray Porter.
