Rina Sawayama will return as Akira, the daughter of Hiroyuki Sanada’s Shimazu Koji, in the upcoming John Wick spinoff Caine, starring and directed by Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Rogue One) for Lionsgate.

On Instagram, the “XS” singer shared her excitement about returning as Akira in the John Wick spinoff, expressing how thrilled she is to continue the character’s journey and hinting that they have unfinished business.

“Rina is such a badass. I loved what she did with this role in Chapter 4 and can’t wait to see her cross paths with Caine once again,” director and producer Chad Stahelski adds.

Plot details have not yet been revealed, but the film is described as a Hong Kong-style action thriller, similar to the movies Donnie Yen is known for. The screenplay will be written by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II, BRZRKR). The film will focus on the events following Caine’s release from his obligations to the High Table.

In addition to Caine, the success of John Wick: Chapter 4 led to several spinoffs, including the 2023 miniseries The Continental starring Mel Gibson, the film Ballerina starring Ana de Armas, an upcoming John Wick 5, and an anime-style prequel set before the first film.

Sawayama made her acting debut in John Wick: Chapter 4, where she also contributed the song “An Eye for an Eye,” featured in the film.
