Barkada feels are strong in Netflix’s new Filipino romantic-comedy miniseries, Happy Crush, which stars Maymay Entrata as Carla, who navigates her mother’s death, while a celebrity returns to their hometown and reconnects with an old flame.
On Facebook, director and head writer Carlo Enciso Catu (Kung Paano Hinihintay ang Dapithapon / Waiting for Sunset) shared how the project has gone through quite a journey, dating back as far as 2020. It wasn’t until 2021 that his sister found a producer for the project, which ultimately got the ball rolling.
“Agad kong sinimulan ang pagbuo ng mundo ni Carla, isang fifteen years old na dalagita na may ultimate crush na naniniwalang kahit anong mangyare, sila at sila pa rin ang magkakatuluyan (I immediately began building the world of Carla, a fifteen-year-old girl with an ultimate crush who firmly believes that no matter what happens, they’re meant to end up together),” Catu shares.
Additionally, the series takes us back to the feeling of having all the time in the world, specifically, “‘Yung panahon na parang ang bagal lang ng galaw ng mundo. ‘Yung panahon na ngiti lang ni crush, ayos na ang lahat (the kind of time when the world seemed to move so slowly, and a single smile from your crush was enough to make everything okay),” he adds.
Joined by Kelvin Miranda as Migs, Andre Miguel as Snow, and Zach Castañeda as Ayon, 2025 proves to be a fruitful year for Entrata, who has been blessed with projects left and right. Earlier this year, she also released her latest single, “Paradise,” and “Nasaan Ang Hiling?,” the Filipino version of the Snow White live-action remake’s theme song.
