Renowned stage actress Gab Pangilinan is set to take on the role of Mary Magdalene in the forthcoming Philippine production of the internationally acclaimed rock opera musical, Jesus Christ Superstar.

The news was shared by the local production’s producers, GMG Productions, as part of their full announcement of the musical’s principal casting for the Olivier Award-winning production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Aside from Pangilinan’s involvement with the show, other cast members from previous UK, North America, and Australian tours of the production were revealed to join the Philippine run of the show, including Luke Street as Jesus, Javon King as Judas, Ethan Hardy Benson as Pilate, Grant Hodges as Caiaphas, and Kodiak Thompson as Annas. Further casting is expected be announced soon.

“We are incredibly happy to have Gab Pangilinan in the international company of Jesus Christ Superstar,” shared Carlos Candal, the CEO of GMG Productions. “Gab is a respected and accomplished artist, and her casting as Mary Magdalene highlights the strength of Filipino theatre talent,” he continued.

Pangilinan is recognized across the local and international theatre circuit for her performances in The Last Five YearsSide ShowAng Huling El Bimbo The Musical, and Mula Sa Buwan, having been nominated three times as a Philstage Gawad Buhay nominee for Pingkian: Isang Musikal (2024), The Last Five Years (2023), and Mula Sa Buwan (2022). She has also won Best Leading Female Performance (Digital) at the 27th Asian Television Awards for Still: A Musical Narrative Series and has worked with leading theatre companies, such as PETA, Tanghalang Pilipino, Atlantis Theatrical, and Full House Theater Company. Most recently, she has appeared in productions of We Aren’t Kids Anymore and Othello.

Since its debut on Broadway in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar portrays the events that led to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as seen through the perspective of Judas Iscariot. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles among Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, Jesus’ disciples, his followers, as well as the Roman Empire.

GMG Productions’ staging of the musical was originally set to run from May 2 to 24, 2026, yet due to fan demand has been extended to run until May 31, 2026, at the The Theatre at Solaire. Tickets are available via TicketWorld here, with prices ranging from Php 2,010 to Php 7,046.
