Carly Rae Jepsen is officially making her debut as a songwriter for a musical.

On April 23, 2025, Billboard exclusively announced that beloved ’90s coming-of-age romantic-comedy film 10 Things I Hate About You is officially being adapted into a musical, with Jepsen set to co-write the adaptation’s score. The “Cut To The Feeling” hitmaker will be doing so alongside singer, songwriter, and producer Ethan Gruska (Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers), whom she collaborated with before on songs found on her latest studio album, 2023’s The Loveliest Time. Meanwhile, acclaimed writer, director, producer, actress and Girls creator Lena Dunham will be co-writing the book alongside playwright Jessica Huang.

Notably, this marks Jepsen’s latest involvement in productions related to musical theater. Previously, she portrayed Cinderella in 2014 for the Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella Broadway production and took on the role of Frenchy Facciano in the Emmy-winning TV special Grease Live! in 2016. Like Dunham, this marks her first time working from behind the scenes in relation to a musical theater production.

Working alongside them and Gruska and Huang are a number of prominent figures in Broadway. Directing and choreographing the adaptation is Christopher Wheeldon, director and choreographer for Tony-winning productions An American in Paris and MJ: The Musical; and former New York City Ballet resident choreographer. Meanwhile, the multi-award-winning Tom Kitt — writer of Next to Normal — will serve as music supervisor, arranger and orchestrator. In addition, producing the adaptation “through a special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical” is Mike Bosner, known for producing Beautiful — The Carole King Musical and, most recently, Shucked.

Based on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of The Shrew, the 10 Things I Hate About You film was released in 1999 and starred Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik. Prior to this musical adaptation, it was reimagined through a television reboot, with the movie’s director Gil Junger also directing a number of episodes while Richard Gibbs, the film’s composer, also helmed the show’s music. It aired for 20 episodes from 2009 to 2010.
